What MERV means
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a standardized way to describe how effectively an air filter captures particles across several size ranges.
MERV is separate from physical filter size. A 20 × 25 × 1 filter can be sold as MERV 8, MERV 11, MERV 13, or another rating.
MERV 8
MERV 8 is a common residential choice. It is generally intended to capture larger household particles such as dust, lint, pollen, and some mold spores while maintaining relatively low airflow resistance.
That makes it a practical baseline for many residential systems, but it is not a universal recommendation.
MERV 11
MERV 11 typically captures smaller particles than MERV 8 and may be useful when a homeowner wants more filtration of fine household debris.
Because filter construction varies, the MERV number alone does not tell you how much resistance a specific filter creates in a specific HVAC system.
MERV 13
MERV 13 provides finer filtration than MERV 8 or 11 and is often discussed when reducing smaller airborne particles is a priority.
Finer filtration can also create greater airflow resistance. Some residential systems are designed to handle it well; others are not. Follow your equipment manufacturer's guidance or ask an HVAC professional before increasing filtration substantially.
Higher is not automatically better
The best rating is the one that provides appropriate filtration without creating an airflow problem for your equipment. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow, affect comfort, and make the blower work harder.
HomeOS treats MERV as a separate equipment fact rather than assuming that the highest number available is the right choice.
